October Intake (Putin’s dupes)

1 min read
The lucky ones will run scared.

We’ve seen them on their departure:
Young men, older men, all someone’s
son, husband, father – all now one;
now Russia’s final sacrifice;
and all to assuage one man’s vice.
They shuffle together, now close
in their cheap uniform clothes;
all their individuality
ironed out for the coming fight,
for which they are ill-prepared.
The lucky ones will run scared;
the rest will come home in coffins.

  1. A sad fate indeed. Reading about the young men who went to fight the war that means nothing to them i felt so sad. Their lives will be sacrificed for the benefit of one man. Truly heartbreaking.

    1. Thanks for your comment Kiula. And yes, it is a tragedy, especially as they are harvested even older men, as the image shows.

  2. When a person joins the army(be it in any country), he is always ready to sacrifice his life for it. If the top leader asks for it they have got to do it because they swore for it. It is their destiny, they will be worshiped and honored in Russia but will be hated in the world. I can’t speak for everyone but if my country would be at war, I would happily join the forces to fight, be it right or wrong but it is my duty as a citizen.

    1. Thanks for your comment Mike. The only issue I’d raise is that these men – some middle aged and older, are not joining voluntarily; they are being forced into Putin’s war without any training; and going up against battle hardened soldiers. Quite simply they will be cannon fodder, lucky to survive first contact in conflict. As far as ‘my country right or wrong’ ; that is a very worrying (to me) mind set.

  3. Your writing captures the bitter reality of a soldier’s life. Putin once said that our military might is the guarantor of Russia’s security and independence. But how do they make children feel secure without their fathers? How do they make wives feel secure without their husbands? If young men sacrifice their lives for the war, who will need an independent country then?

    1. Thank you Amanda, for your wise comments. And yes, the unfolding tragedy is no less for its affect upon the Russian people. We can only hope and pray that there are still some ‘grown ups’ that can take away Putin’s toys – the lives he is squandering.
